Aesthetics of a Healing Space

Reception and Waiting Areas

Childrens Surgery Center
Healthcare facilities are used for many purposes, but the end result is healing.  These types of spaces  can sometimes inhibit healing and wellbeing rather than nuture patients back to good health. What if our healthcare environments were built around the 5 senses to interact with our own personal experiences to facilitate healing?
This project was an exploration of the traditional 5 senses, SIGHT,SOUND, TASTE, TOUCH,SMELL and the importance of sensory perception as part of the healing process.  the investigation will provide a solution to how the healthcare environment can facilitate comfort, safety, healing, and general wellbeing through shaping our physical experiences from the attributes of our environment.

DESIGN RESEARCH CONCLUSION:
The 4 fundamental needs for good design:
Sense of Control = Privacy
Comfort
Connected to life outside the hospital  through internet and outside environment
family involvement

Reception facing towards the waiting area
Interactive Play time:
Glass containers filled with objects that symbolize one of the five senses as related to one of the elements. The wheel moves theobjects in the case.
Example:   Air Blowing Feathers
This was a process drawing used in the conceptual phase of the project.  The picture is that of a child interacting with elements inside the containers that represent one of the five senses.
Family Waiting Area:
Pillows that look like rocks, drawing area on walls, wallpaper that glows
Patient room in natural light
Patient room transformed:
By a flick of a switch the patient can change the mood in the room to what suits their mood.  The example used would be a child who wanted the room to have scales like a reptile.  A little girl could change the room into pink bunnies. It is all controlled by the lighting system found near the entry. The effects are all shadows created by the central lighting system.
